Linda Hermann, CSCP APICS-FLWC VP of Programs May 2007 Jerry Kilty, CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP APICS is about professional development! As a past president of the APICS-FLWC chapter, I have enjoyed the many benefits of "BEING INVOLVED" in APICS activities. Specifically, Networking: Networking has been defined as the number one way to enhance your career through employment opportunities. There are many opportunities to network within APICS, such as the chapter's Professional Development Meetings (PDM), Region meetings, International Conferences, to name a few. Over the years I have been able to expand my APICS network to include many good friends and colleagues. I especially enjoy the opportunity to meet and interface with the many folks that share professional interest in supply chain and operations management. Career Services: The FLWC chapter has one of the best career services divisions across the country and its going to get even better in the future. Currently, the web site, www.apics-flwc.org has a listing of available job opportunities, which is kept very current at all times. Additionally, there is an excellent flow chart to guide those seeking employment as to the steps necessary to succeed. This flow chart was developed utilizing many outplacement tools, which would costs thousands of dollars otherwise. Check it out. This is an area that the chapter is going to be focused on in the upcoming year attempting to broaden the activity and its benefits to the members. Certifications: APICS sponsors three certifications. Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM), Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP). All three of these credentials are critically important to your professional development and career enhancement. Today, more and more positions are requiring the certifications. Education programs: The FLWC chapter has always attempted to be a leader in offering quality education programs. These take the form of PDM'S, Seminars, and Certification Review courses. Stay tuned for the launching of new ON LINE courses. Chapter BOD: A truly rewarding experience is to become active on the Chapter's Board of Directors. This is an opportunity to develop leadership skills and provide strategic direction for the organization. Getting involved simply requires attending the BOD meetings. They are open to all members and are conducted on the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8 PM. Just contact any board member for specifics. Region & Society level Committees: I have found additional satisfaction by volunteering for Regional and Society level positions, which afford the opportunities to expand my APICS network and involvement. My message is simple, get involved in APICS and enjoy Life Long Learning opportunities to enhance your professional development and career.
