TOPIC: Learn to Listen - to Learn

Just because you're talking, does not mean I'm listening. The skill of listening is taken for granted by nearly everyone. Active listening is not hard to do but it does require concentration and a conscious effort. In today's world of rapid change and greater use of teams to resolve problems or take advantage of opportunities, our ability to effectively listen is becoming increasingly important for success. We must be able to hear what someone else is saying and understand the entire message. That includes what is meant by the specific words used, by the emotions behind the words, and even an understanding of what is not said. Through the use of active listening that we can increase our individual and team productivity.

This interactive workshop will explore why good listening skills are so important and identify the key elements that must be done for successful active listen. The techniques for paraphrasing -- to close the loop in active listening -- will also be defined. Finally, all participants will have an opportunity to internalize their learning in an interactive listening and paraphrasing exercise. The exercise concludes with a discussion of observations to reinforce the learning. In this session, you will:
  • Discover what active listening is and why good listening skills are key elements in the pursuit of continuous improvement.
  • Identify roadblocks that make effective listening so hard
  • Learn how to paraphrase someone else's words and enhance the two-way communication.
  • Actually practice active listening and paraphrasing skills in an interactive exercise.
